Marketplace Protection Terms

Last updated: 20 July 2026 · BorrowLocal (UK)

1. What this is (and isn't)

On successful rentals, listers pay a platform protection fee. That fee helps BorrowLocal run the marketplace and provide limited replacement support where borrower damage is verified under our process.

This is not regulated insurance. It is not an insurance policy, and BorrowLocal is not an insurer or insurance intermediary under UK financial services rules. Nothing here guarantees full replacement value or covers every kind of loss.

2. What limited support may cover (high level)

Where a rental was paid through BorrowLocal, handovers were confirmed with our codes, and the lister reports verified damage beyond normal wear and tear within the 24-hour window after return, we may (at our discretion and subject to these terms) contribute toward repair or replacement up to limits we publish or confirm for that rental.

Typical exclusions include: wear and tear, pre-existing damage, loss or theft without a clear handover trail, misuse outside the agreed purpose, illegal use, or claims where the parties settled off-platform.

3. Conditions for any support

  • The booking and payment must have been completed on BorrowLocal. Off-platform or cash payments for that rental may void protection.
  • Collection and return codes must have been used as required
  • Damage must be reported within 24 hours of return confirmation, with photos and a clear description
  • Chat and order records may be reviewed as part of assessing a claim
  • Users must cooperate reasonably with our review; fraud or false claims may lead to account action

4. Optional extra cover

From time to time we may offer optional extra cover for an additional fee at booking or listing. Extra cover, if offered, will have its own price, scope, and limits shown before you buy it. It still is not a regulated insurance product unless we clearly say otherwise and arrange it under the right permissions.

5. Limits & discretion

Any contribution is subject to caps, item category limits, and evidence requirements. We may decline support where conditions are not met, evidence is insufficient, or the claim falls outside scope. Platform fees already paid are generally not refundable solely because a claim is declined.

Listers remain responsible for describing items honestly and setting appropriate rates. Borrowers remain responsible for careful use and timely return. See also the Rental Agreement between the parties.

6. Your legal rights

Nothing in these terms affects rights you may have under UK consumer law that cannot be excluded. For marketplace rules generally, see our Terms & conditions. Questions: Contact us.
