Rental Agreement

Last updated: 20 July 2026 · Template between lister and borrower (UK)

1. Who the parties are

This agreement is between the lister (the person offering an item) and the borrower (the person renting it) for a booking made on BorrowLocal. BorrowLocal provides the marketplace tools (listings, payments, chat, codes, and related features). Except where our platform Terms & conditions say otherwise, BorrowLocal is not a party to this rental and does not own the item.

2. The rental

The item, dates, price, delivery or collection options, and any special conditions are those shown on the listing and confirmed in the booking. By completing a booking (lister accepting availability via the listing; borrower paying), both parties agree to this template as the baseline rental terms for that order, unless they agree something clearer in writing in the order chat that does not breach platform rules.

3. Lister responsibilities

  • Own the item or have the right to lend it for the booked period
  • Describe condition, accessories, and any quirks honestly
  • Make the item available as booked and hand it over in the stated condition
  • Confirm collection and return using BorrowLocal handover codes
  • Report any damage beyond normal wear and tear within 24 hours of return confirmation

4. Borrower responsibilities

  • Use the item carefully and only for its normal intended purpose
  • Do not sub-lend, sell, or permanently alter the item
  • Return it on time, clean and in the same condition (fair wear excepted)
  • Confirm handovers with the codes provided and keep coordination in the order chat
  • Tell the lister promptly if something breaks or goes wrong during the rental

5. Condition, handover & return

Both parties should note the item's condition at collection (photos in chat help). The rental period runs from confirmed collection to confirmed return via BorrowLocal codes. Late return may incur additional charges if set out in the listing or agreed in chat, and may affect reviews or future bookings.

6. Damage & loss

The borrower is responsible for damage beyond normal wear and tear, and for loss while the item is in their care, subject to any limited marketplace support described in the Marketplace Protection Terms. Normal wear and tear from ordinary use is expected. Disputes should start in order chat; BorrowLocal may review records where protection or platform rules are involved.

7. Payment

The rental price and any delivery fee must be paid through BorrowLocal for bookings made on the platform. Arranging cash or other off-platform payment for that rental breaches platform rules and may void marketplace protections. Do not use order chat to organise off-platform payment for the booking.

8. Cancellation & problems

If either party needs to cancel or change dates, they should say so promptly in the order chat. Refunds or adjustments follow platform processes and any options shown at booking. Persistent no-shows or misuse may lead to account action under the platform Terms.

9. Governing law

This agreement is governed by the laws of England and Wales, unless mandatory local rules say otherwise for a consumer living elsewhere in the UK. Nothing here removes rights you cannot legally waive.
